Peda is a very popular way to break fasts, as it’s easy to prepare, and with the combination of milk, nuts, and spices, it’s said to provide a burst of energy.

Peda are very similar to Burfi - they're often made with the same base. Whereas Burfi tends to be set and cut into squares, Peda are rolled into balls and then gently flattened into a small circle. Most pieces will have a little crater in the middle where a sliver of pistachio or an almond will be pressed in, for crunch.

Peda - Choc

Unsalted butter

2 tbsp

Full fat milk powder (we like to use Nido)

115g

Cocoa powder

35g

Vanilla extract

1 tsp

Pinch of salt

For the topping:

Chopped pistachios

Step 1 of 4

Add the butter to a large non-stick saucepan and melt over a low heat. Add the condensed milk, milk powder and cocoa powder and mix gently until full combined.

Step 2 of 4

Continue stirring until the mixture starts to turn smooth then add the vanilla and salt. Keep stirring as the mixture thickens to prevent burning.

Step 3 of 4

Once the mix has thickened and starts to pull away from the sides of the pan, remove from the heat and transfer to a greased tray.

Step 4 of 4

Once it is cool enough to handle, roll small balls of mixture and make a small dent with the tip of your finger. Fill it with slivered pistachios or nuts of your choice. Place it on a parchment paper and let it air dry for a few hours.
